The Microbiome: More than Gut Health

posted on: 09.06.2026

Microbes are in the hidden parts of your body, at the unreachable corner of your office, in blue lakes and inhospitable mountains peaks, what are the implications of it?

The first thing that comes into many people minds when somebody talks about the microbiome is probably the tiny microorganisms that are living in our digestive track. That is true, but it is a very incomplete truth. Only within our bodies, we already have several other microbiomes that contribute to health, like the oral and skin microbiome.

Microbiomes are not only found within our bodies. As one of the earliest forms of life on Earth, they are spread across all environments, from soil and oceans to the air and even to extreme habitats such as hot springs and polar regions. And microbes have always been with us. In fact, can we still be ourselves without them? This is partly a philosophical question; however, for biologists, the answer is short and direct: life as we currently understand it, would not exist without microbial life. This phenomenon also extends beyond human life, as every ecosystem has an associated army of microbes that carry out significant roles within it.

In this article we will be exploring some of the different microbiomes and their importance for human and planetary life.
